Maritime Industry, Marine Insurance, Difficult Year Ahead Says Willis

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

Insurance market, P&I, in flux in the aftermath of ‘Costa Concordia’ disaster

After an inauspicious start, 2012 will be another difficult and uncertain year for the maritime industry faced with the aftermath of the Costa Concordia, further problems in the Euro zone, pirate attacks and increased sanctions, according to the latist Willis Marine Market Review  (part of Willis Group Holdings, the global insurance broker).

The latest report reveals the Hull market is in a state of flux following the Costa Concordia disaster in January. Some underwriters in the London insurance market, which will bear the majority of the estimated USD 500m hull claim, are adamantly refusing premium reductions or even flat renewals. However, unaffected underwriters in the Far East and Scandinavia are more open to negotiations.

Alistair Rivers, CEO of Willis Global Marine said: “For many marine insurers the year began badly with the loss of the Costa Concordia cruise liner. It was a timely reminder that 100 years on from the loss of the Titanic, disasters on this scale are still possible despite all the industrial and technological advancements. But while this loss may have stiffened the hull market, the long term impact is questionable. The P&I and Liability aspects of this loss will be of far greater significance to insurers as matters evolve throughout the year.”

The Marine Review describes this years’ February P&I renewals as disproportionately confrontational and protracted as ship-owners operating in one of the worst economic environments for a generation contested even inflationary increases from Clubs. On average, rate increases of 4% were achieved. Excess capacity in the Asian marine insurance market is putting pressure on rates as local and foreign insurers compete for market share.

Asia is now home to around half of the world’s merchant fleet, 14 of the top 20 ports and three of the largest ship building nations.

Kvichak Marine Will Build Two Marine Transport Vessels

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

Seattle, WA – Kvichak Marine Industries Inc. was recently awarded a contract by Puget Sound Energy to design and build one each 32’ and 38’ Marine Transport Vessels for PSE’s Baker River Hydroelectric Project.

The vessels will be used at a new downstream fish-passage facility PSE is constructing behind the utility’s Lower Baker Dam to further enhance fish populations in the Skagit-Baker watershed in northwest Washington.

The transport vessels will be utilized to transport personnel, equipment and collected juvenile fish in custom aluminum tanks, designed to minimize any stress imposed on the fish.  Constructed of marine grade aluminum alloy, the vessels are designed with a flat bottom and flat deck, along with a pilothouse, built to accommodate two persons. The 7,500-pound aluminum tanks sit on the deck of each vessel and transport captured fish from the innovative Floating Surface Collector PSE is building to the shore, where the fish are then transported around the dam by water truck before being placed back in the river for downstream migration.

Delivery is scheduled for Summer, 2012.

Marine Components Remanufacturing Taking Off

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

Caterpillar, Tru-Marine, present the case for remanufacturing industry to Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) members at Singapore Facility

In its continuing efforts to promote the benefits of remanufacturing, Caterpillar Inc.hosted representatives from several Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies at its newest Cat Reman® facility in Singapore. The tour was part of a meeting of APEC’s Market Access Group where industry and government experts from all 21 APEC economies learned more about how remanufactured goods are returned from end-of-life products to same-as-new specifications.

For customers, the availability of remanufactured goods means more uptime for their products, which translates into significant production and financial benefits. In the case of Solar turbine engines, a subsidiary of Caterpillar, the use of a remanufactured unit can mean the difference between several days for an exchange with a remanufactured unit compared with up to four months to remove, transport, overhaul, and return an end-of-life unit to the customer.

Caterpillar isn’t the only company incorporating remanufacturing into its business model. APEC representatives also toured the Tru-Marine Pte Ltd facility in Singapore (Tru-Marine recently started remanufacturing turbocharger components).

“Our business premise is to recover turbochargers to their original maker quality instead of the premature renewing of useful components,” explains David Loke, Tru-Marine group managing director. “Constant innovation has been a key tenet at Tru-Marine that enables us to provide better value than commonplace turbocharger Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) methods.  Remanufacturing aligns with our strategic progression toward sustainable technologies to reuse resources, and to reduce down time and wasted by-products.  Cost savings are in turn passed on to the customers when the lifespan of such high value resources is extended.”

With 35 years of extensive experience in turbocharger reclamation and industry leadership in turbocharger research and development, remanufacturing has become a natural evolution for Tru-Marine to move up the value chain.  The remanufacturing processes will capitalize on the company’s current turbocharger MRO core competencies, complete with proprietary test procedures to certify that remanufactured components have achieved their original maker specifications.

Friday, January 6th, 2012

Under New Ownership, Freeman Marine becomes part of the Advanced Marine Technologies Group.

Freeman Marine Equipment Inc., a globally recognized brand and major US supplier to the worldwide marine industry, is now part of Advanced Marine Technologies (AMT). The company was purchased by AdvanTec Global Innovations of British Columbia, Canada.  AdvanTec owns the four companies that make up the AMT Group.  The other members of the group are Diamond Sea Glaze, Steelhead Marine and Manly Marine.

Freeman Marine is the latest acquisition AdvanTec has made in its marine manufacturing division.  Freeman brings thirty-six years of innovative design, manufacturing experience, project management and customer support to the enlarged AMT family of leading brands for yacht, commercial, ferry, military, patrol & rescue vessel needs.  Located in Gold Beach, Oregon, USA, the company has 85 employees, including a specialized team of engineers and designers.  With a customer base spanning over 50 countries worldwide the company will continue to operate from its present location with no changes to management planned.

Freeman is a world leader in marine closures.  They offer a broad line of both fabricated and cast products.  Freeman’s cast aluminum deck hatch product line provides more features, sizes and shapes than any other manufacturer in the world.  Their custom crafted closures can be found on a wide range of vessels including megayachts, government security boats, fish, tug and supply vessels, passenger ferries and large recreational boats.  They also offer an extensive line of precision-machined aluminum portlights and custom windows to meet the needs of marine builders around the world.  Freeman Marine is an ISO 9001:2008 registered company following lean manufacturing practises.
