General Dynamics NASSCO Begins Construction of USNS John Glenn

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

San Diego – General Dynamics NASSCO today began construction of the future USNS John Glenn, the second ship of the U.S. Navy’s Mobile Landing Platform (MLP) program.

The 765-foot-long ship is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy in the first quarter of 2014.  When in service, the ship will be used as an offshore staging area for Navy and Marine personnel and equipment.

NASSCO has construction contracts to build a total of three MLP ships. The first ship of the class, the future USNS Montford Point, is currently 48 percent complete at the San Diego shipyard.  Once delivered to the fleet, MLP ships will join the Maritime Prepositioning Force squadrons strategically located around the world to enable rapid response in a crisis. MLP ships will provide a “pier at sea,” which will become the core of the Navy-Marine Corps sea basing concept. This capability will allow prepositioning ships to offload equipment and supplies to the MLP for transshipment to shore by other vessels.

The United Seamen’s Service (USS) 2011 Admiral of the Ocean Sea Awards (AOTOS) will be presented to James L. Henry, Chairman and President of the Transportation Institute; General Duncan J. McNabb, Commander, U.S. Transportation Command; and Robert D. Somerville, Chairman of ABS (formerly the American Bureau of Shipping).

The maritime industry’s most prestigious awards will be presented at a gala industry dinner and dance to be held at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers, New York City, on October 28, 2011.  A special AOTOS recognition plaque will be presented to Captain George Quick, former President of the Association of Maryland Pilots.

“We are so proud to be able to honor labor, military and service providers who represent strong leadership in the maritime industry. They are being recognized for their significant contributions and important ship services to American seafarers, vessels and American commerce,” said Richard Hughes, Chairman of the USS AOTOS Committee and President of the International Longshoremen’s Association, AFL-CIO.

James Henry has played in virtually every major initiative in United States maritime policy since he assumed the presidency of the Transportation Institute in 1987 and became its chairman in 1990. He played a particularly key role in protecting the Jones Act when it came under attack in the mid-1990s.

Mr. Henry is also Chairman of the National Defense Transportation Association’s Military Sealift Committee and Chairman of the United States Maritime Coalition. In 2005, he was awarded the Vincent T. Most recently, the Institute advocated for the U.S. Jones Act fleet to play a critical role in the BP oil spill clean up as well as for adequate channel and harbor depth within the Great Lakes.

General McNabb is commander of U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), the single manager for global air, land and sea transportation and the world’s largest shipper for the Department of Defense. A command pilot, he has amassed more than 5,600 flying hours in transport and rotary wing aircraft. He graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1974.

General McNabb has held command and staff positions at squadron, group, wing, and major command and Department of Defense levels and has more than 20 awards, recognitions and achievements. These include serving as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans and Programs on the Air Staff and Chairman of the Air Force Board having oversight of all Air Force programs.

General McNabb will retire this summer from the military.

The American Bureau of Shipping (now ABS) promotes the security of life, property and the natural environment primarily through the development and verification of standards for the design, construction and operational maintenance of marine-related facilities. Mr. Robert Somerville has led the global agency consisting of more than 3,000 employees, serving as its Chief Executive Officer until April 2011. He now serves as Chairman of ABS.

Serving as Director of ABS Group of Companies, Inc., Mr. Somerville’s distinguished maritime career includes 40 years with ABS in various capacities. Prior to joining ABS in 1970, he served as a seagoing engineer and gained shipyard experience at Newport News, at the time the largest shipbuilder in the world.

Mr. Somerville serves as a volunteer member of the MMA Alumni Association Board of Directors, trustee of the Seamen’s Church Institute, and Vice Chairman of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). He is a member of the Maine Maritime Academy Classof 1965 and completed Harvard Business School’s program for Management Development in 1987. He has devoted his professional life to the marine industry.

In addition to the three AOTOS recipients, Captain George A. Quick will receive the AOTOS plaque honoring his many years in the industry, particularly his activity in the pilot sector. He is a 1951 graduate from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and earned his Juris Doctorate degree in 1967 from the University of Baltimore Law School. He is admitted to the practice of law in Maryland and is a proctor member of the Maritime Law Association.

Captain Quick served as a deck officer on passenger and cargo ships until 1956 when he entered the training program of the Association of Maryland Pilots. He holds a federal license by the U.S. Coast Guard as master and first class pilot and state license by Maryland as a pilot of ships of any draft. He was President of the Association of Maryland Pilots; Vice President of the American Pilot Association and since 1982 has been Vice President for the Pilot Membership Group of the International Organization of Masters, Mates and Pilots (MM&P) representing pilots throughout the United States and the Panama Canal.

All proceeds from the AOTOS event benefit USS community services abroad for the U.S. merchant marine, seafarers of all nations, and U.S. government and military overseas. The recipients will share the evening with a group of American seafarers who will be honored for acts of bravery at sea.

For AOTOS 2011, Michael Sacco, President of the Seafarers International Union, is Dinner Chairman. Samuel B. Nemirow and F. Challenging Themes at BIMCO’s Vancouver General Meeting

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

Climate, energy and demographics are to be discussed by industry leaders in Vancouver BC, when BIMCO, the world’s largest representative shipping organisation holds its General Meeting in the Canadian city in June this year.

Issues of sustainability are never far from the thoughts of ship operators these days, especially when contemplating the purchase of new ships, which may well have a 25 year lifespan. Shipping people have to look further ahead than most, as they contemplate the future demand for their ships , the probable regulatory changes they will face over the years and what exactly the world will look like, as these capital-intensive investments mature.

Nobody can ever “future-proof” their business, but the best prepared to meet future challenges will be those who have at least anticipated some of them. Within the broad theme of sustainability, the BIMCO General Meeting on 6-8 June will gather some world-class expertise to advise BIMCO members on their future direction, as climate change, the fast-moving energy situation and the important matter of demographics influence their business strategies.

In a full day seminar, presentations on these three all-important subjects will be given by HE Jose Maria Figueres, Chairman of the Carbon War Room, Dr Fatih Birol of the International Energy Agency and Dr David Foot, the world-renowned expert on demographics. Panel discussions led by some of the world’s best known shipping industry leaders , including COSCO Group Vice-President Dr Sun Jia Kang, Dr Helmut Sohmen , Chairman of  BW Group, Philippe Louis-Dreyfus, Chairman of Louis Dreyfus Armateurs Group and Hapag-Lloyd’s Executive Board Chairman Michael Behrendt, will then confront these issues and produce valuable pointers as to how these challenges can be overcome.

BIMCO General Meetings have a reputation for inspiring thought and encouraging ideas and Vancouver is expected to be no exception. The programme, says BIMCO Secretary-General Torben Skaanild “focuses attention on a number of vital issues which shipping people need to consider as they take their businesses forward”.

The meeting, which is expected to bring together shipping industry leaders from around the world, will also provide a day-long event for BIMCO 39 members, the networking platform operated by the shipping organisation for younger shipping professionals. “Green Shipping seen from the Perspective of Ports and Shipowners” will feature President Designate of BIMCO Yudhishthir D. Khatau, Vice Chairman and President of Varun Shipping Co. Ltd and expert speakers from industry, who will include Seaspan’s President and CEO Gerry Wang.  There will be presentations on clean air, regulatory changes that will impact upon shipping and ports, environmental policy, future fuels, ship design and other important topics.

The BIMCO General Meeting will also see the introduction of the new BIMCO Web-Based Diploma Programme, in which expertise and modern technology blend to provide the latest in distance learning.

General Dynamics NASSCO Delivers Fifth Product Carrier Ship

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Today General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD), delivered the fifth ship of its State-class product carriers to American Petroleum Tankers, LLC, a joint venture of the Blackstone Group.  The ship is named Evergreen State, in honor of the state of Washington.

A christening ceremony for Evergreen State (Hull 505) was held to commemorate the ship’s entrance into the U.S. Fleet.  The ship’s sponsor was Carol Kurz, wife of American Petroleum Tankers’ Chief Executive Officer Robert Kurz.  Carol Kurz broke the traditional bottle of champagne across the ship’s side in front of an audience of about 200 who had gathered at the shipyard to witness the ceremony.

“Completed more than nine months ahead of our original schedule, under budget, and in substantially fewer man-hours than the lead ship of the class, the Evergreen State reflects NASSCO’s high performance in product carrier construction,” said Fred Harris, president of General Dynamics NASSCO.

NASSCO began constructing the Evergreen State in May 2009.  At a length of 600.4 feet (183 meters), the environmentally-responsible, double-hulled ship has a cargo capacity of approximately 331,000 barrels and will be used to carry petroleum and chemical products between U.S. ports.  With today’s delivery of Evergreen State, General Dynamics NASSCO has now delivered five State-class tankers: the M/T Golden State, M/T Pelican State, M/T Sunshine State, M/T Empire State, and M/T Evergreen State to the U.S. fleet, on time and under budget.
